The Metamorphosis 变形记, 2024-2026
Co-written by Yueming Li and Yejia Sun and co-directed by Frank Yan and Yibin Wang, the play The Metamorphosis 变形记 follows five young people in Beijing, China, who meet on the set of a pseudo-documentary based on Kafka's The Metamorphosis during the COVID-19 pandemic. As the set faces a major quarantine and the production falls apart, the characters' own stories also begin to unfold...
The play was staged at the Black Box Theatre in New York City on April 16-17, 2024.
The playscript of The Metamorphosis was revised and published in the journal Zhongguo zuojia 中国作家 in 2026. In this new version, caught up in a snowstorm, the characters embark on a journey into the future, where they interact with the readers and the audience beyond the world of the play.
